SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES RESIDENCY (NOVEMBER 2023)

Our second residency Something Wicked This Way Comes, hosted 65 students across all years of the UWE  BA and MA, and took place over 3 nights in Okehampton, Dartmoor. Taking influence from the location and with Halloween and bonfire night approaching, we ran the residency around the theme of myths and folklore. There’s a legendary figure in local Dartmoor folklore; the spirit of the Old Crockern, who protects the lands of Dartmoor and rears his head when he feels the land has been wronged. Right to Roam protests earlier that year aimed to raise his spirit as a way of highlighting the importance of access to land. In a similar spirit, this residency connected those who attended with the natural world around them.We invited the magical Henwyn Collective to run sustainable workshops on foraging, anthotypes, chemigrams and lumens, and film developing with plants. UWE alumni Nat Atwell and Gracie Evans also ran pinhole camera and mushroom paper making workshops. Other activities included a fire pit and mulled wine, yoga, group walks, a variety of spontaneous student-led projects, and finally an exhibition of all the work created over the weekend.
